LINEN & LACE FESTIVAL
On 16th, 17th and 18th May a wonderful celebration of the role of textile production will take place between the two centres of Castleblayney in County Monaghan and Bessbrook in County Armagh. The event is organised by Castleblayney Tourism Association and Bessbrook Heritage Group and will appeal to all those with an interest in local crafts and in particular lace-making and weaving.
The area around Castleblayney was renowned for growing flax, the raw material used in the production of linen. It is situated between the two great lace-making centres of Carrickmacross and Clones. Bessbrook, as a historic Model Village, had one of the most productive and innovative linen mills of its time and produced the highest quality linen for both the domestic and international markets.
The Linen & Lace Festival is a fusion of traditional and contemporary textile crafts and will include Carrickmacross and Clones lace making workshops on Friday 16th and Saturday 17th at the Swallow Studios, Annyalla, Castleblayney; hand-weaving demonstrations; a guided coach tour through the historic landscape between Castleblayney and Bessbrook; guided tours of Bessbrook; evening meal and entertainment and an Artisan Craft Fair on Sunday 18th in the historic grounds of Derrymore House, owned by the National Trust. The cost for taking part in the activities on the Friday and Saturday is only £23 (30 euros), plus £8 (10 euros) for materials. This represents terrific value for money. The fee for the guided bus trip only, is £8 (10 euros). There is lots of overnight accommodation available in the Castleblayney and Bessbrook areas.
On Sunday, the Artisan Craft Fair from 2pm – 6pm, at Derrymore House, on the Camlough Road in Bessbrook, is free of charge and will give visitors a great opportunity to see and purchase a range of beautiful locally made crafts. Car parking will be at St Paul’s High School, Bessbrook, with a free shuttle bus to Derrymore.
The Linen & Lace Festival is a Cross Border Festival and is supported by EU INTERREG lllA Programme for Ireland/Northern Ireland through CASA.
To book a place on the workshops and bus trip, please email Liz email lizzyc@eircom.net or telephone Liz Christy on +353429746614. For further details on the Artisan Craft Fair, please contact Ann on 028 30830424 or Rosemary on 07885 416490.
