Liz Christy - Hand Woven
Liz Christy Hand-Woven Scarves & Throws are wearable art, they are beautifully made Irish textiles with wide appeal as a special gift. Each scarf or throw is an original and special, guaranteed hand-woven in Ireland.
Textile designer and hand-weaver, Liz weaves in Annyalla just outside Castleblayney, overlooking the beautiful rolling hills of County Monaghan. She has a passion for her craft, as she works at Swallow Studios, a lovely bright and airy workshop.
Liz’s love of colour echoes what she sees around her every day, the fresh hues of springtime crocuses and bluebells, the vibrant highlights in our summer landscape, the richness in shades of autumn as well as shimmering water-filled winter scenes. Her use of colour and texture results from a fusion of inspiration from the surrounding lush drumlin countryside and paintings by her favourite artist, Claude Monet. She also has designed collections inspired by works by Paul Gauguin and Edward Hopper.
As Liz says “ours is an age-old craft with no electric switches, our flying shuttle looms are operated by ‘human’ power alone. Threads pass through our hands many times in the making of our textiles. We design and prepare the warp counting out the threads of the Monet inspired warps. We then dress the loom by combing these onto the loom. Our fabulous weft yarns, which we also hand-dye are then woven to make our textiles. Weaving complete, the fringes are then hand-tied after which we wash them…all by hand”
