Frances Sawaya

Since making her first doll’s dress , Frances Sawaya has been fascinated by colours, textures and the potential of fabric combinations. Many of her quilts are created from memories of her travels or from her observations of the countryside near her home in rural Cavan.
Though Frances gives most of her time to wall quilts, she accepts commission on large quilts or duvet covers in both traditional and contemporary designs. Frances is one of the founding members of The Quilter’s Guild of Ireland and belongs to several other quilting groups locally and nationally. Frances also organises the Lakeland Quilt Fair held at Cavan County Museum; this annual event attracts participants from the UK, mainland Europe as well as every 0segment of the island.
In 2002 Frances was awarded first prize in traditional patchwork and quilting at the RDS National Crafts Competition for her piece entitled, ‘Each of Us is Like the Moon’.
